Preventative Maintenance
DIESEL GELLING & ICING

How to avoid cold temperature starting problems:
  • Just as doctors advocate preventative medicine to help patients avoid physical ailments, so should diesel engine operators take preventative steps to avoid diesel gelling and icing.
  • GELLING is the formation of wax crystals in diesel fuel as it approaches it's cold point. Gelled fuel is difficult to pump and clogs fuel filters and fuel lines.
  • ICING is the formation of ice crystals in diesel fuel as water in the fuel tanks and lines begins to freeze.
Water in your fuel, even in minute amounts, can be problematic at any temperature. In freezing temperature, ice crystals form in fuel tanks and lines, plugging filters. In warmer condition, water can build bacteria, which can also plug fuel filters.

TO AVOID PROBLEMS IN YOUR FUEL SYSTEM DUE TO WATER INTRUSION:
  • Make sure fuel tank cap and vents are on tight and in good condition and operate flawlessly;
  • Keep your tank full at all times to eliminate condensation;
  • Check tanks regularly for water and drain tanks routinely if water is found;
  • Maintain clean filters. (Change fuel filter on your pump monthly)
